HAHAHA! This is just too hilarious. In these circles it's not unusual to occasionally run into a link or comment by "Muslims Against Sharia". The comments, oddly enough, seem to show up where there are stories about Pamela Geller, the links to the works of MAS usually show up on Atlas Shrugs. Well, Rev. Jim Sutter over at Chasing Evil has finally figured out those behind this befuddling online entity, and the results are nothing short of hilarious:
MAS presents themselves as religious Muslims who wish to reform Islam “away from the evil and into good.”
What made me suspicious of this site? First, for religious Muslims, they use a tremendous amount of obscenities in commenting on other sites. Secondly, they do not use the required “pbuh” (praise be unto him) when referring to Muhammad, as religious Muslims do. Third, they want to –and are in the process of – rewrite the Qur’an, a holy book delivered from God to an angel to Muhammad. One does not do major rewrites to the word of God. Lastly, the anti-Muslim rhetoric is too almost identical to sites run by anti-Muslim and neo-Nazi extremists.
Let’s take a look at who is really behind this site (and all their periphery sites.).....

I had looked at their Blogger Profile before after they once left a comment here and was rather surprised to see that Pamela Geller was somehow a member of the group, especially with her insistence that there is no such thing as a "moderate Muslim" or of any sect of Islam that isn't inherently bad. I didn't realize that she had that much to do with MAS though, not until I read this and the Free Thinker link above:
So far so good. MASh appears to do exactly what it says on the tin: they are Muslims, and they are against sharia.
So it was surprising to see, buried away in their Blogger profile, that one of their main “Team Members” was Atlas Shrugs (aka Pamela Geller) - the right-wing, Bushier-than-Bush blogger who only last month was calling for Islam to be banned. Had Pamela “reverted” to the one true religion?
And why would MASh take on such a high-profile blogger and keep her hidden away? Did they think having an anti-Islam neocon on board might undermine their credibility? Or are they actually anti-Islam neocons themselves, and they simply forgot to cover their tracks by tidying up their Blogger profile?
The Freethinker asked MASh spokesman “Khalim Massoud” outright: “Are you in any way connected with American neocons?” - thereby giving him the chance to come clean and explain the Atlas connection. He answered:

Curiously, the site contains absolutely NO membership or governance information at all. No indication of who created this organization, who its members are, who manages it, who governs it, who sets its policies and direction…nothing. Sort of odd for a non-profit advocacy group - especially one that’s fundraising.
There is, however, a page that allows you to donate by Paypal, Mastercard, Visa, or Amex to “help fight Islamofascists”. And that page lists the donors. The first “donor” on the list, if you google it, turns out to be the Executive Director of the organization. The second “donor”, turns out to be a member of the organization who seems to spend most of his time posting anti-Muslim taunts on various blogs. At that point I stopped Googling “donors”. Feel free to continue down the list - I’d be curious. There aren’t many of them....
....If you dig deeper into the “blog”, you’ll find lavish praise for Ann Coulter and George Bush, articles by a lot of Fox pundits like Bill Gertz, extensive condemnation of Islam in ALL its forms, of Democrats, and of every Muslim country on the planet. In an hour of searching, I didn’t find a single entry…not one…that said anything positive about Muslims. I did find this entry, which actually argues that “moderate Muslims” pose a greater threat to mankind that Jihadists. What a strange argument for a site called “Muslims Against Sharia” to make.
In fact, the articles posted on the blog are once again completely indistinguishable from the sort of URQ Muslim-hatred one expects from the likes of Shaidle, McMillan, Sentinel, and the emerging neo-Nazis.
So…who EXACTLY are Ezra’s new little friends, these “Muslims Against Sharia”? We’ve figured out that they really like Republicans, don’t like Democrats, are single handedly rewriting the Koran, seem to rely on an awful lot of extreme right wing sources for their blog content, and don’t really seem to have much actual Muslim input at all. It’s hard to tell, of course, because, as noted above, they carefully give us NO governance, Board, management, corporate or membership information whatsoever....
Conclusions: Who is behind “Muslims Against Sharia”? Pam Geller (the NY shrieking harpie from NY), Ted Belman (Canadian member of a terrorist organization), and Joe Kaufman, (the FL scam artist who turned anti-Muslim crusader after 9/11.) Wow, such a collection of Muslim scholars, I’m amazed that no one other than their fellow bigots, racists and scam artists believe their claims.
Oh boy, it's really quite amusing to me that this little odd group hasn't been exposed prior to the prying of the two reports on them cited here! These are some of the most rabid Muslim-bashers on the web, yet they're pretending to be "reformist" Muslims on a site that gets very little play? Please go to the original post of Rev. Jim Sutter for more on the individuals involved in this scam as well as a plethora of links regarding MAS. Ahh, the joy of discovery! Nah, "joy" really isn't the right word, it's more like HILARITY! When I get more time I'll be sure to head on over there and check this all out firsthand. I'm pretty sure that Rev. Sutter has scoured the place pretty good already. To think, had they refrained from leaving impertinent comments all over the web, they may have stayed completely under the radar. Or they could've gone for big coverage and just been "the big lie". Jeppo, I know vaguely of these people not involved in "The Soap Opera", but yes, most of the "average liberal readers" also hang out at sites like Firedoglake and Sadly, No! (among others) that regularly mock posts from wingnut (far-right wingers) bloggers. These people make regular appearances at these sites. I've seen far too many people new to me via S,N! to be honest. Hell, I didn't know about that Confederate Yankee guy until I read the 1st mockery post about him.

I wrote MAS and suggested that with their project to rewrite the Qur'an - that God doesn't need an editor.

Of course when you link to another blog, that is going to show up on their statistics interface. This can happen within minutes if the blog admin monitors that stuff regularly.
Also, if there are several netizens with admin privileges to a single blog, the odds of alerting attention quickly increase. Add many people, along with resources like twitter, IM, etc., and you could see a veritable swarm in no time.
Now, what is a little more mysterious, is the fact that Sutter seems to be followed around by detractors to the comments sections of various blogs. I've seen this happen more than once, so perhaps these people know which blogs he frequents, or maybe Sutter uses cocomment or something. Maybe its all some strange game or subversion, like it is really one netizen with multiple personality disorder, using sockpuppets to create some faux drama. Who knows.
I've seen stranger things, I guess. At one point, I had my own quack running around other blogs posing as me, for example.
There are sites that have been accused of being spoofs masquerading as legit, and have even made the news. Is it a parody? An attempt to back-handedly smear certain types of people? You be the judge.
